The objective of the International Museum Day (IMD) is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples”. Organised on 18 May, IMD has been celebrated each year since 1977. All around the world, more than 37,000 museums participate in the event in 158 countries and territories. International Museum Day 2019 will focus on the new roles of museums as active actors in their communities: “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition”.

The Museo ABC joins the International Museum Day offering the activity “Drawing the Cosmos”. The Museum becomes a point of observation of the sky and a privileged place for its graphic reinterpretation.

Directed by Maleni Hernán (PhD in Astrophysics, deputy director of the Planetarium of Madrid and painter) in collaboration with the Astronomy Group of the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, the workshop will approach the wonders of the sky. Participants will be able to handle the material that has historically been used for its analysis —telescopes, binoculars, Planispheres…—. We will enjoy observing the sunspots and other jewels of the Universe as the craters and mountains of the Moon in photography and in real time connection with professional telescopes located in other parts of the planet and in the orbit. In addition, we will draw the Cosmos using the pictorial techniques that have been traditionally used in Astronomy before the appearance of photography (charcoal, pencils, crayons and sanguine…).

Together we will be able to shape the Cosmos and feel, for one night, like Galileo Galilei when, four centuries ago, he pointed to the sky for the first time with a telescope and he graphically documented the wonders that captivated him. Thus, Galileo’s legendary diagrams and drawings changed our interpretation of the Cosmos.

The workshop will take place from 7 to 9 p. m. but the exhibitions of the Museum will be open until midnight.
Free access until full seating.
