EULOGIO VARELA
MODERNISM AND MODERNITY
An extensive monograph on Eulogio Varela (1868, Cádiz – 1955, Madrid) that showed the existence of the modern and cosmopolitan Madrid. His designs would be located either in the line of the British Arts and Crafts or in the Vienna Secession. Antonio Aparicio faithfully documents the artist. He first starts from his historical context: illustrating the most recurrent themes of Varela’s work and the emblems of the International Art Nouveau (New Historicism, plant motifs, the woman, Wagnerian decoration, mysticism and Artistic allegories, etc.); and ends his professional work as the general author of the Blanco y Negro magazine –making him one of the pioneers of modern graphic design. As an epilogue, we show Modernist artwork of the artists with whom he collaborated and influenced: GECH, Juan Gris or Joaquín Xaudaró.
